Coffee roasters in Philadelphia

Philly's roasting scene punches way above its rent. Elixr roasts in Center City and has taken home national coffee-competition hardware; Càphê in Kensington is the country's best-known Vietnamese-coffee roaster; Chestnut Hill Coffee has run its own drum roaster for two decades; and Herman's in Pennsport pairs single-origins with a legitimately great corner-store vibe. Most of the list supplies wholesale, which tells you how café-dense this city has become.

Philadelphia is one of the biggest fresh-roast cities in our directory: 26 independent roasters and roaster-cafés across Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with 9,854 customer reviews between them. Elixr Coffee Roasters leads the pack at 4.6★ across 1,764 reviews. 11 of them supply beans wholesale to local cafés and offices. Wherever you land, buy whole bean, check the roast date, and ask what came off the roaster this week — freshness is the whole point of buying local (here's why).

What locals say

Excellent coffee, exceptional service, and a fantastic atmosphere! This is hands-down one of the best coffee spots in Philly. The space has a cool, cozy vibe that's perfect for meeting friends or getting some work done. The baristas are chill, friendly, and consistently make well-crafted drinks.

This is my first visit to this wonderful place, which is ideal for remote work. Upon arrival, I noticed that over three-quarters of the space was occupied by people working on laptops, creating a cozy atmosphere to escape the cold weather while enjoying a cup of coffee.

The interior of the cafe may be small, but the quality of the drinks were pretty good. I like the idea of their seasonal drinks (I'm a sucker for a sparkling espresso) but I only drink unsweetened black coffee and their seasonal drinks were sweetened.
